Q. What is the difference between the iBoss™ Home and a router with parental controls?
The iBoss™ Home brings the same filtering technology used only available to top fortune 500 companies to the home. With the iBoss™ Home, there is no need to enter all the sites you wish to block. Plug it in, pick the categories and/or applications you wish you block and you are done.

Q. Why is the iBoss™ Home Hardware versus being Software?
There are several advantages to hardware. First, they are operating system independent so you will have no potential conflict with your current software on your computers. It is also harder to get around because all Internet traffic has to go through the iBoss™ Home which you have control over.

Q. Is the iBoss™ Home more cost effective than Software parental controls?
Yes. The iBoss™ Home is cost effective since you can control your entire network with one device and subscription. It can filter all of the computers on your network with only one subscription rather than paying for a per computer basis.

Q. What is "myiBoss.com"?

MyiBoss.com is the configuration portal for your iBoss™ Home device. Once your iBoss™ Home is connected, open a web browser and type in the url myiBoss.com. The web browser will automatically connect you to the iBoss™ Home portal where you can manage your Internet rules, edit filtering group settings, view log reports, manage your subscription, and more.

Q. Does the iBoss™ Home work with Dial-up Internet services?
The iBoss™ Home cannot be connected directly to a dial-up modem, since only RJ45 Ethernet jacks are provided. However, there are third party products available that allow connectivity between a dial-up phone connection and an ethernet-enabled device such as the iBoss™ Home. One such product is the WiFlyer which is available from AlwaysOnWireless (Not associated with Phantom Technologies Inc in any way).

Q. Will the iBoss™ Home slow down my network connection to the Internet?
The iBoss™ Home uses patent pending technology that allows for network speeds to be maintained. Unlike other filters, the iBoss™ Home inspects only small parts of the data going through it taking only what it needs to determine the URL that the package is trying to get to. Using its powerful hardware processor, network speeds are almost identical than that running without the iBoss™ Home. Also consider that computer speeds will be untouched compared to software filters that can slow down a computers speed due to the processing power they require and there interaction with the operating system.

Q. Will the iBoss™ Home filtering work with the AOL browser?

Since the AOL browser tunnels and routes all Internet traffic to their servers, the iBoss™ Home will not be able to filter the network packets that are run through it correctly. This is because AOL uses a proprietary protocol to connect to their servers. In addition, you will not be able to log into the iBoss™ Home using the AOL browser. We recommend using Internet Explorer or Firefox. To resolve this issue, you may block the AOL browser from going out for the requests and use an alternative web browser. You can do this by blocking the port number used by the AOL browser (5190) within the iBoss™ Home custom port blocking section.

Q. Why is there a subscription?
The web is an ever changing place. New websites are added daily. Phantom Technologies maintains a database in which the iBoss™ Home communicates with to update itself with all these new sites and old sites to determine what category they fall under. The subscription ensures you have the latest up to the minute sites on the web and are categorized instantly when a user attempts to reach that site. Since this is an ongoing process, the subscription is needed to maintain these updates.

Q. Will the iBoss™ Home work without the subscription?
The filtering of content will not work without a subscription. The wireless and router functions will work without the subscriptions but you will not be able to use the parental control functions of the device without an active subscription. This is because the iBoss™ Home needs to constantly be connected to the Phantom Technologies database and only achieved with an active subscription.

Q. Can the iBoss™ Home set different filtering rules for the different computers on my network?

Yes. The iBoss™ Home will allow you to have 3 different filtering groups with different set of rules. You will be able to identify multiple computers and specify which filtering group you would like the computer to be filtered by or if you do not want any filtering set for certain computers. This is useful for setting different rules for different specified computers. You may name the filtering groups to better remember what rules you have set for them (ex: Parents, Teens, Kids, etc.) and set the identified computers to these set of rules or bypass filtering all together.
